Linux Pages

Updated: 03/03/2007 - I'm currently running the Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn on my notebook. The latest update downloaded a new kernel (2.6.20-8) which stopped my broadcom wireless drivers from working. If this happened to you, then this is how I fixed it.

Older (probably obsolete?) stuff is below

When you first migrate to Linux from another OS your always looing for alternative applications that you used to have on your old platform. This can be a pretty daunting task and it requires a lot of googling to find alternatives. I've created this page to list alternative applications. You can vote for your favourite application or suggest new ones for me to try.

Web Browsers

This is my original experience of moving from Windows to Linux. I won't be updating it anymore as all the applications that I'll be trying will be added to the pages above.

Configuring (K)Ubuntu

Here are my notes and links on setting up my System. I'm putting everything up here in case my system dies and I have to reinstall.

The first thing you probably want to do is set up your system to play mp3s. There is a great wiki page showing how to get Ubuntu to play some popular restricted formats including Java, Flash, AAC, RealMedia and DVD's.

Truecrypt is a great crossplatform (except no Mac OS X yet) tool to encrypt your data. This link shows you how to install truecrypt using the source. If your luck, there will be pre-built packages, but for newer releases of the kernel (and with Ubuntu the updates come pretty quick) you will probably need to install from source. This guide includes setting up a build environment.. I'll ruin the suprise by saying it's as simple as typing "sudo apt-get install build-essential".

Installing Truecrypt on Ubuntu Dapper release

I used to be a big fan of ATI video cards when using Windows(tm) but the Nvidia drivers for Linux are much better and if your buying a new video card for Linux then I have to recommend the Nvidia cards. The following link shows you how to install the latest Nvidia drivers.

Configuring (K)Ubuntu (The Easy Way)

If you'd like to set it up easily, you can give EasyUbuntu a go. This is a little python script (with gui) that is designed to make it easier to get a Ubuntu system up and running. It can setup install things like Rar and Ace unarchiving, 3D videocard drivers, Java, and audio and video codecs.

I installed most of my stuff manually since I found this a bit late, but I did try and run it to configure a few other things and it seemed to get stuck trying to get the system time? Give it a go and let me know what you thing. :)
